Air-Assisted Direct Fuel Injection
The system incorporates a direct charge injector operating in conjunction with a conventional EFI fuel injector. This decouples the fuel measurement from the fuel delivery of the fuel-air mix to the combustion chamber. The independence of these two events allows the fuel delivery profile to be tailored at each operating condition, resulting in greater control across a range of speeds and loads.
A central feature of the OCP technology is the use of low pressure air as the propellant. The system operates at pressure of nominally 6.5 bar gauge compared to single fluid systems operating between 60 and 200 bar.
The air used to inject the fuel performs another function unique to OCP DI. The air provides extra oxygen at the spark plug when high levels of recirculated exhaust gas (EGR) are used to improve fuel economy and reduce Oxides of Nitrogen (Nox).
